Climbing Skills Courses

Fox Mountain Guides and Climbing School is the  Southeast leader in climber education. We offer courses for gym climbers wanting to start climbing outdoors and people that have never climbed through to the seasoned climber with years of experience. The reason that our courses are unmatched for quality or content is our instructors, AMGA Certified Rock Guide Adam Fox, AMGA Certified Rock Instructors Ron Funderburke and Karsten Delap are the only guides that teach our courses. They are AMGA Certified Instructors with years of experience with not only climbing but also teaching curriculum in a wilderness setting.

Foundation Level Courses

This course is designed for people with little or no previous outdoor rock climbing experience. Our Rock Climbing 101 Courses cover the broad range of climbing skills focusing on movement, equipment, communication, leave no trace, climbing ethics and tones of climbing!

Intermediate Level Courses

These courses are aimed at more advanced climbers that have been climbing on rock in a top rope setting or have completed our foundation level courses. These courses focus heavily on the technical skills needed to climb in the single pitch setting safely and efficiently.

Prerequisites: Taken our Foundation Level Courses or can top rope 5.6 climbs, rappel and have some experience placing artificial gear and building anchors.

Advanced Level Courses

Our advanced courses are for climbers with extensive backgrounds in single or multipitch climbing. The Advanced Level Courses cover high-end topics focusing on smart, cutting edge systems with minimal equipment. The skills in these courses are similar to those taught in our Guide Training Courses. Whether you have just come through our Foundation and Intermediate Level Courses or are a seasoned climber with years of experience climbing multipitch rock we guarantee you will learn an amazing amount of new tricks and skills on these courses.

Prerequisites: Taken our Intermediate Level Courses or can traditional lead 5.7 climbs, rappel and have experience building artificial and natural anchors.

Climbing Instructor and Guide Training Courses

These courses are made up of one of in house training courses along with the National Standard for climbing Instructor and Guide Training and Certification, The American Mountain Guides Association. The Rock Climbing Instructors Workshop is designed for Summer Camp Staff, Scout and Church Group Leaders as well as any professional teaching rock climbing such as Outward Bound, NOLS staff. The AMGA Courses start with the Top Rope Site Manager for people working in single pitch environments and the Rock Instructor Course for those that wish to go onto Rock Instructor Certification and guide clients on multipitch rock.

Skills Course Flowchart

The flowchart below represents our suggested path through our skills courses. The courses have been refined over the year with courses being added, changed and discontinued as we have found the perfect fit and flow for our training program. These courses can be taken in any order and you don't have to start with Rock Climbing 101, but if you are a novice climber or never climbed before you will get the most out of the training program and the most bang for your buck if you follow the suggested outline. These courses are scheduled throughout the year but if you don't see a date on the schedule call us and we can arrange to set up a new date. All the courses can be taught on any date 12 months of the year as 'Private Instruction' either for yourself, a group of friends or for your organization. It is also possible to create any training program you wish as Private Instruction for as many days as you wish, in the past clients have booked us for 9 days straight of private instruction following all the skills classes below from Rock Climbing 101 to Multipitch Lead.
