Looking Glass Area Information Print E-mail

The climbing areas of Looking Glass Rock including Cedar Rock, Pilot Rock (not to be confused with Pilot Mountain!) are located just minutes from our headquarters in Pisgah Forest near Brevard just 30 minutes Southwest of Asheville (10 mins from Asheville Airport AVL), North Carolina. This is our base and of course our most popular destination for climbing year round. All ability levels from beginner to advanced/expert climbers will find excellent and challenging  climbing in this amazing area.

At this location we have our offices, custom built classroom and ‘workshop’ to teach classes in inclement weather. We also have a fully stocked Climbing Equipment store ‘Guides Gear Outfitters’, and if we don’t stock an item our friends down the road at Looking Glass Outfitters will hopefully have what you need. We have drinks and snacks for sale as well as bathrooms, climbing book library and high speed WiFi at this location.

  • Area Ideal For: First timers through advanced climbers. Good for groups
  • Types of Climbs: Single Pitch/Top Roping (first time climbers) to Multipitch (intermediate/advanced) and aid climbing available at these areas

Driving Directions

For Looking Glass Rock areas, Whitesides, Laurel Knob, HWY 215, unless otherwise arranged you will meet your instructor/guide at our head offices and shop,3228 Asheville Hwy, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768. The shop is the blue building located on the corner of Asheville Hwy (Hwy 280) and Capps Road. If you are on Asheville Hwy coming from I-26 (past Asheville Airport) the shop will be on your left, if you are traveling from Brevard it will be on your right. There is a large sign outside the shop with the FMG logo and text "Rock Climbing School".

Note for GPS Navigation Systems

If you will be using a GPS Navigation System the local addresses have been updated by 911 (back in 2006) but the major map databases have not. Our physical location on the corner of Asheville Hwy and Caps Rd is actually '700' Asheville Hwy on a GPS. So if you are using a GPS please type in ‘700 Asheville HWY’ and not ‘3228 Asheville HWY’ or else you will end up about a mile down the road!

You can use the Google Map program below to get directions to the meeting location from wherever you are!

Recomendations

"How can I learn to climb? I asked all around Charlotte and I got the same answer from Jessie Browns, Inner Peaks and Great Outdoor Prov. Co. All three said to contact Fox Mountain Guides because they were the best out there. So with 3 Fox brochures in hand I called to schedule the Rock Climbing 101 Course. I then took the Single Pitch Lead Course and then the ‘Master Class’ in December from Adam himself. It's been the best money I've spent for climbing yet!"
