Petey started climbing as a freshman at Montreat college, Montreat NC. Throughout his time in the Outdoor Education program at Montreat, Petey’s passion for climbing and southeastern rock grew and was coupled with the opportunity to instruct trips for his school’s outdoor programs. In 2012, Petey began working for Black Mountain Expeditions facilitating group programs on and off the rock. After graduating from Montreat College, he received his American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor certification. In 2015,  Petey left the Southeast and spent a season guiding and climbing in sunny Joshua Tree, California. In the spring of 2017 he completed his American Mountain Guides Association Rock Guide Course.

Some of Petey’s favorite places to climb are the granite slabs of Joshua tree, bullet hard sandstone crack climbs of the Tennessee wall, and the alluring walls of Shortoff Mountain.
