It’s getting to be SC climbing season again!! @vertical_dan had a great day showing a guest the lay of the land at Big Rock. With a healthy mix of sport and trad routes, Big Rock has something for everyone. We’re grateful to the @carolinaclimberscoalition for securing access to this gem!

Anchor cleaning has gotten a lot of deserved atten

Anchor cleaning has gotten a lot of deserved attention since the tragic accident at Sand Rock a couple weeks ago. A quick search will yield many examples of different ways to clean a sport anchor, some simple but many that take a more complicated approach. We advocate for and teach our guests the simple method endorsed by the @americanalpine in their “Know the Ropes” video series (link in bio), with one additional recommendation: the cleaner should unclip the last draw as they are cleaning the route but leave it on the hanger and clip the belayer’s side of the rope into it, then clean it on the way down. This simple step backs up the anchor cleaning process and would catch a fall from the anchor should the cleaner make a mistake. As long as the climber is still tied in, they will just take a leader fall rather than a ground fall.
